The European Hematology Association (EHA) has developed a comprehensive range of educational programs and resources to improve knowledge and skills in hematology among healthcare professionals, researchers, and students worldwide.

These programs are developed by hematology experts, instructional design specialists and medical writers, ensuring that the content is unbiased, current, and relevant.

The European Hematology Exam

The European Hematology Exam aims to certify knowledge according to the criteria and topics of the European Hematology Curriculum. The European Hematology Exam is regarded as an extra quality stamp for hematologists. The seventh European Hematology Exam was held on June 8, 2023. In total, 206 candidates took the exam, of whom 68 were at the main session of the EHA Congress in Frankfurt, Germany. In parallel with the main session, national hematology societies from 13 countries organized a local exam session for candidates residing in their countries. The main exam session and the parallel local sessions took place simultaneously.

The European Hematology Progress Test

The European Hematology Progress Test is an online learning tool designed to help prepare for the European Hematology Exam and to help identify knowledge gaps.

Curriculum

In 2023, EHA released an improved curriculum. Aimed at harmonizing hematology education throughout Europe, it now includes a detailed description of all hematology topics. This standardized curriculum for the EU supports a solid background in theoretical and practical knowledge in hematology.

The EHA European Hematology Exam, Progress Test, and educational materials are developed based on this curriculum and are used by national societies to develop their own medical education. The curriculum is now available in seven languages – English, Spanish, Italian, Turkish, Danish, Bulgarian, and Portuguese – and at the time of publication had been downloaded more than 1800 times since its release on July 31, 2023.

Mentorships: Masterclass and Lighting the Flame

Mentorship provides an opportunity to learn from the experienced. EHA runs two mentorship programs - one for practicing hematologists and another for medical students interested in hematology with the intention of becoming one.

The EHA Masterclass

The EHA Masterclass is an online clinical preceptorship for hematologists in which challenging clinical cases are studied in international peer groups over nine months. Participants learn from international opinion leaders in hematology in a pedagogical and didactic approach.

Lighting the Flame

The aim of Lighting the Flame is to spark interest and offer students, interns, and residents a clear image of what hematology is all about. In July 2023, Lighting the Flame hosted its first hematology retreat, featuring a carefully crafted program that engaged 27 students from 14 European countries. Mentored by a team of 11 faculty members, the curriculum extended beyond clinical and research perspectives, encompassing vital subjects such as patient communication.

Online learning and EHA Campus

EHA provides comprehensive e-learning courses, clinical cases, podcasts, and bite-size education materials for learning on-the-go. It is truly hematology education by hematologists for hematologists. Education materials are created following the European Hematology Curriculum, and we now have a total of 426 online learning items.

EHA Campus

The EHA Campus hosts the catalogue of EHA education materials, including programs, courses, and clinical cases.
